EAF Equipment

The electric arc furnace (EAO) is an alternative in iron and steel production. Contrary to the basic oxygen method, the electric arc furnace does not use hot metal. It is filled with "cold" metal (which is normally scrap steel). The scrap steel is dumped into the electric arc furnace by crane from above, then the furnace is covered with a cover. This cover carries three electrodes which are lowered into the arc furnace. The electricity flowing through the electrodes creates an arc and the resulting heat melts the scrap. In the smelting process, other metal alloys are added to provide the required chemical composition. Oxygen is also blown in to purify the steel.

After samples are taken to check the chemical composition, the arc furnace is tipped on its side and the slag floating on the molten steel is poured out. Immediately afterwards, the arc furnace is tipped to the other side and the molten steel is transferred to a ladle. From there, a second process starts or it is transferred to the "caster".
